PopHaus Collective Presents It’s Kind of a Fun Story™
A Party Game That Builds Community
A team of independent creators/friends create a storytelling party card game and challenge the juggernauts in the party game world to make a nationwide impact at Target this summer.
It’s Kind of a Fun Story was created by Robert Freeman Smith, Joe Boyle, and Josh Kemper; three longtime friends from Chicago, IL who form PopHaus Collective. What once started as a game for a Halloween party in 2018, the team began working in earnest together over the pandemic in 2020 to create an experience that plays like a fast-paced party game but builds relationships at the same time. After a year of playtesting with over 240 people, writing hundreds of questions to find the perfect set, and adjusting game mechanics to keep players engaged (all while still working their full-time jobs), the team at PopHaus Collective was ready to introduce It’s Kind of a Fun Story to the world.
The game was originally funded on Kickstarter in Winter 2020 and became available in October 2021. Throughout 2022, Robert, Joe, and Josh traveled to local and national street festivals and gaming conventions to spread the word and in August, attracted the attention of national distributors and retailers at Gen Con in Indianapolis. After navigating scaling into the world of national retail, It’s Kind of a Fun Story is officially launching exclusively at Target – online on June 4th and in stores nationwide July 30th.
It’s Kind of a Fun Story is a love letter to the LGBTQIA+ community and the idea of a found family – people who may not be related to you but whom you hold closer than anyone else in your life. It was created with the idea of strengthening friendships and bonds with a vulnerability that isn’t necessarily common in other spaces today. The game meets players where they are at, allowing them to lean in or lean out whenever they are comfortable and bond all while they think they are just playing a party game. A fully customizable experience makes It’s Kind of a Fun Story perfect for game nights, happy hours, adult family get togethers, bachelorette parties… pretty much any time people are gathered.
